Grow In Your Faith

"But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit."

— Jeremiah 17:7-8

Throughout the series Faith Grows Here, the plants on the propagation walls in the Narthex and the Atrium will be a visual representation of faith taking root in our lives through Jesus Christ and the living water of the Holy Spirit. Rooted in love, our faith can provide encouragement and hope in our families, our community and the world.

Visit the propagation walls and watch how the roots continue to grow deeper as we explore what it means to be rooted in faith in Jesus. While there, you may take one of the kits provided to propagate a plant at home as a daily reminder of your growing faith. Can’t visit the walls? You can still propagate a plant at home using the instructions below.

  1. Select a vining plant, herb or other plant. Good examples are pothos, monstera and philodendron.
  2. Find a healthy stem that has root nodes, make sure there are several healthy leaves above the node, and cut the stem about 1-2 centimeters below the node using a clean, sharp pair of scissors.
  3. Insert the cutting into a clear container filled with room-temperature water, ensuring the root node is fully submerged. Remove any leaves below the surface and keep some above to give the plant energy while it grows.
  4. Place the container in a warm spot that gets plenty of light but is out of direct sun. Keep an eye on the water level and top off as needed to keep the nodes submerged. Replace the water at least once a week, or more regularly if it starts to discolor.
  5. You’ll likely see new roots emerging within a few weeks. Keep checking water levels until the roots appear or it’s clear that the stem has died, and you’ll need to try again.
  6. To transplant, wait for the roots to grow about 3 centimeters. Take care to hold the plant by the stem. Use good quality potting mix and water well to settle the soil instead of pressing it down.
  7. Keep the pot in the same place for a few days for the plant to adapt before moving the plant to the permanent location.
