Confirmation

Confirmation is a big step in your child’s personal faith journey, readying him or her for a life of discipleship and Christian service. Our Confirmation program prepares your sixth grader to claim the Christian faith as his or her own.

WHAT IS CONFIRMATION?

Confirmation has been a Christian practice going back to the early church in the Book of Acts (Acts 8:14-17). Confirmation signifies the receiving of new members to the church, the receiving of the Holy Spirit, and the public confirming of one’s faith in Jesus Christ. Biblically, confirmation follows baptism; therefore, there will be an opportunity for any confirmands who have not yet been baptized to be baptized before Confirmation Sunday in May 2025.

CONFIRMATION 2024-2025

THE WOODLANDS CAMPUS

In keeping with Christian tradition, the confirmation journey at TWMC consists of the following:

Religious instruction (Catechesis)
The laying on of hands by the pastors of TWMC on Confirmation Sunday in May (Confirmation)
The invocation of the Holy Spirit into the hearts and minds of each confirmand (Confirmation)

WHAT IS CATECHESIS?

Historically, the church has guided confirmands through a season of preparation that has included prayer and instruction on practicing the Christian faith. This instruction is commonly referred to as “catechesis,” which ultimately leads to confirmation.

Confirmation at TWMC is available to all incoming sixth graders who register to participate in our catechesis. The schedule of our catechesis aligns with the school year, starting in August and ending in May. Our catechesis is segmented into three main phases throughout the school year and focuses on a different theme each month. From August to November (Roots), your confirmand will be rooted in God’s Word and an understanding of the biblical narrative. From December to February (Grow), your confirmand will grow their personal discipleship and worship of Jesus Christ. From March to May (Thrive), your confirmand will thrive to serve others and advance the kingdom of God in the world.

Confirmands are placed in a “House” group of 7-10 students to journey and grow together in community throughout the school year. Houses are led by a combination of parents, adult leaders and high school student leaders. Within a small group, your confirmand will develop a spiritual foundation while building valuable relationships with the other students and leaders of their group.

Catechesis occurs about three Sunday mornings per month as Houses gather to learn about and live out the Christian faith together through “sessions.” Sunday morning sessions include prayers, readings and testimonies, biblical lessons, small group discussions and group activities. Sessions allow learning to be heard, processed aloud and applied through creative, collaborative and engaging outlets. Sunday morning sessions begin at 9:00 a.m. in Wesley Hall.

Participation in the confirmation program requires worship attendance at TWMC, memory work of designated passages, attendance at a confirmation retreat, completion of service projects, devotional Bible study and attendance at Sunday morning sessions.

MONTGOMERY CAMPUS

The Church at Montgomery does not offer a confirmation program at this time; however, interested families with sixth graders may register for the confirmation program offered at The Church at Woodforest, which meets on Sundays at 12:30 p.m. on the Woodforest Campus.

CREEKSIDE CAMPUS

Our 20-week confirmation program is perfect for sixth graders (and older teens who are not yet confirmed) eager to explore their Christian faith. Through weekly gatherings, students will dive into the big stories of the Bible, Methodism, worldviews and apologetics. Confirmation is a powerful journey designed to help them make their faith personal and practical. The schedule aligns with the school year, starting in August and ending in May with Confirmation Sunday. Confirmation class meets Sundays at 4:30 p.m.

WHAT IS CONFIRMATION?

While the Bible does not specifically mention confirmation, we believe it is a crucial student experience. Through confirmation, your student will develop a firm grasp of the gospel message and be given the opportunity to decide to embrace the Christian faith along with their church. In doing so, they will be welcomed as full members of the church at the time of their confirmation. Your students will be immersed in Christian community and form strong friendships with other travelers on their journey.

The confirmation curriculum for Covenant Church at Creekside looks at three primary areas.

  1. The Bible — The goal is for students to be able to find Bible verses/stories, have a basic grasp of the arc of Scripture, and feel confident studying the Bible on their own.
  2. Identity in the Global Methodist Church (GMC) — We will break down the importance of Christianity and also what it means to be a part of the GMC. We will study time-tested traditions of the church, namely the Apostle’s Creed and the Lord’s Prayer, and also gain a basic understanding of Wesleyan theology.
  3. How to live a Christian life outside the walls of the church — We want students to leave confirmation with confidence in their faith, knowing they can talk about their beliefs with others in their schools, neighborhoods and communities.
